Maintaining Your Faith in College

By Ashley Paskill on April 22, 2018

College is a time for students to explore what they like and find out who they are. This is especially true when it comes to matters of faith. While studies show that most young people choose to go against the faith they grew up with once they go to college, many others are concerned about maintaining their faith in a secular environment. If the latter describes you, there are ways to maintain your faith while on campus.

1. Join a campus faith organization.

Most college campuses have some form of organization for various faiths. Some even break down each religion into organizations based on denomination so you may find the denomination you grew up in or can explore others. These organizations allow you to meet others who are like-minded and are going through the same things you are, which is important, especially if your home faith community does not have many people your age.

2. Find a local place of worship to call “home away from home”

Whether it is a church off campus, a small prayer group in the apartment next door, or a synagogue in the city or town you go to college in, find a place to worship that you feel welcome at.  Find something in your denomination or in one that you have been meaning to try. Having a place to connect with others with your same beliefs will give you a place to go when you are in need of support and encouragement in the stress of college.

3. Join online groups and communities

If you are having a difficult time finding an in-person community or organization to join, try searching for online chat rooms or groups that provide a sense of community online. While it is important to be careful about whom you give information to or who you trust with your story with, connecting with people online can allow you to help your faith from the comfort of your home or wherever! Download apps that have a community or that can point you to in-person communities.

4. Do not be afraid to explore other faiths and denominations

Even if you want to maintain your faith, it is still important to branch out to other religions or denominations within your faith can help your faith to grow. You will learn more about how others think. Many people think that learning about other religions will taint your belief in your own, but it can actually draw you closer. Attend an interfaith event or take a class that teaches about various religions or one that you have been wanting to learn about.
